Awkward Collaboration

Aside from all the intense relationships, wounding, best memories of our lives and so on that families give us, they can also be wonderful, rich inputs for creative work because of the great diversity of personalities within them.

I actually did collaborate a lot with my siblings growing up (on plays, songs, stories and so on) and I stand by each and every one of them as solid collaborators, I’d be happy to work with any of them again.

However, I’ve also got this gem under my belt (no disrespect to the collaborator, but simply acknowledging our chemistry/lack thereof).

For all who have ever wondered, how the eff am I supposed to relate to this [sister, uncle, mother in law, cousin, guy that I don’t think is even related to us but is somehow always at these family gatherings], this one’s for you.

My invitation to you: invite a family member, perhaps an extended one, who is very different from you in personality, but nevertheless down to play, to do some kind of a collaboration together and see what wonderful weirdness you get out of it. Enjoy the strangeness of you two existing in the same universe.

The song below is the musical equivalent of an awkward family photo. I meant it as a way to connect and hang out with this genuinely loved person, who also loves and plays music, though coming from a very different starting point in terms of musical background and preferences. She’s awesome on her own, and I, on my own, I am me.

Together…You be the judge.
